ACS Chess Tournament Delivers Closest Finish in Association History

The ACS Chess Tournament, graciously hosted by Loyola College on Friday 8 May, delivered one of the most dramatic and tightly contested finishes in ACS history.

In an extraordinary team battle, Westbourne Grammar School claimed the 2026 ACS Champion Perpetual Trophy with a score of 29.5 points, narrowly edging out Overnewton Anglican Community College on 28 points. Remarkably, just 2.5 points separated first place from fifth place, highlighting the incredible depth and competitiveness across the competition.

The final team standings were:

1. Westbourne Grammar School – 29.5
2. Overnewton Anglican Community College – 28
3. Bacchus Marsh Grammar (Woodlea Campus) – 27
4. St Leonard’s College – 27
5. St Michael’s Grammar School – 27

The tournament featured a number of outstanding individual performances. Niraj P from Bacchus Marsh Grammar (Woodlea Campus) finished equal first overall with a perfect score of 6, earning the Individual Gold Prize. Westbourne Grammar School’s Ethan B also scored 6 points to claim the Individual Silver Prize, while Stefan M (St Michael’s Grammar School), Dulein P (Bacchus Marsh Grammar – Woodlea Campus), and James J (Westbourne Grammar School) shared the Bronze honours.

Congratulations to all students who competed throughout the day with exceptional focus, sportsmanship, and resilience. The standard of play across the tournament was outstanding and reflects the continued growth of chess within the ACS competition.
