In 2015 St Leonard’s were able to keep a determined Westbourne team at bay to achieve a clean sweep of the major three trophies. There wasn’t much that separated the two teams but a mere 65 points. St Leonard’s knew they were in for another hard fought championships in 2016 and Westbourne were sensational pushing St Leonard’s all the way to finish in 2nd place by 17 points in the Overall Aggregate section. St Leonard’s were outstanding in the relays which gave them the edge to win the Pat Tyrrell Overall Aggregate Trophy and the Michelle Laidlaw Boys Aggregate Trophy. Westbourne edged out St Leonard’s to win the Kiera Smialek Aggregate Girls Trophy by 25 points thanks to spectacular performances by their two Female Swimmers of the Meet who won every individual event their competed in.
The St Michael’s team continues to be a consistently strong presence in the pool finishing 3rd across all three sections. Beaconhills were the big improvers finishing 4th in the Overall Aggregate and Aggregate Boys scores up from 6th in 2015, with the girls team improving from 7th in 2015 to 5th in 2016; a great effort. Loyola, Overnewton and Thomas Carr had some great results throughout the day with Thomas Carr winning the Year 9 Girls Medley Relay. The scores don’t always show how close the finishes were so all teams are to be complimented on the way they performed and their ‘never give up’ attitude.
Perhaps inspired by the F1 cars speeding around the Albert Park race track and the F18 Hornets zooming across the sky, swimmers from Westbourne, St Leonard’s and Beaconhills set 12 new records. One Westbourne swimmer beat her own record from 2015 in the same event. Another Westbourne swimmer smashed the Year 10 Boys 50 m Freestyle record which had been held since 1998. The St Leonard’s Boys Year 12 relay team were able to set the only new relay record for the day which had been held by St Michael’s since 2009.
Congratulations to the St Leonard’s and Westbourne teams on winning the major trophies and congratulations to all swimmers that took part in what was an exciting day of swimming.
