2017 Night Matches

Overnewton v Loyola

On Wednesday 17 May 2017; Overnewton and Loyola Colleges competed in the 3rd Annual 1st XVIII Football Night Game at Keilor Oval, Old Calder Highway, Keilor.

The evening began with an inspirational talk from Western Bulldogs AFLW player Libby Birch to the Year 7 – 9 Girls teams preparing for their first ACS Girl’s football match which was played prior to the 1st XVIII Boy’s game. Libby had all the girls mesmerised as they learned how as a dual sport athlete she played in winning teams for both a Victorian Netball League Championship and a Victorian Football League Premiership. With that the girls went out and played an outstanding game. Overnewton showed their deft skills and excellent set ups in taking a solid lead into the last quarter. Loyola too were displaying great skills and never gave up. In the closing minutes of the match Loyola were able to kick two late goals as it looked like they were warming up to kick a few more. Time got away before they could add anymore to their score with Overnewton running out winners.

Year 7 – 9 Girls: Overnewton 7 – 7 – 49 def Loyola 3 -2- 20

Both teams for the Senior Boys 1st XVIII match were presented to the guests in the club rooms prior to the game. In front of a great crowd the game got off to a good start with both teams moving the ball well. It was a tight first quarter but Overnewton kicked away in the second and third quarters with a greater number of attacks inside 50. However in the final quarter Loyola kept chipping away and were able to get inside their forward 50 much more and peg back the lead. Two more late goals sealed the match for the visitors and Loyola ran out 10 points winners in a fantastic display in the final quarter.

Dale Morris of the Western Bulldogs and a former Overnewton student presented the “Morris Medal” to the Most Valuable Player on the ground from Loyola College and reminded the players to never give up on their dreams.

Final score in the Boys 1st XVII: Loyola 77 defeated Overnewton 67
