2018 ACS Swimming Wrap
It was an uncharacteristically quiet start to the championships; no F1 cars roaring around the Grand Prix track, teams quietly warming up, that was until our singer from Beaconhills College opened the event with a beautiful rendition of the national anthem and then we were underway in a big way. The first two events produced new records by the reigning Champion Female and Male Swimmers of the Meet from Westbourne. In the first event the Open Girls 200 Individual Medley, Westbourne’s star female swimmer broke her own record from 2016 with a time of 2:22.36. In the second, Westbourne’s star male competitor smashed the record held by Thomas Carr since 2008 by almost three and a half seconds.
At the half way mark with the completion of the Open 200 IM and Medley relays 2017 Champion school St Leonard’s College was off to a good start and a handy lead in the scores. Westbourne Girls are only three points behind at this stage with several teams putting in strong performances. There’s a terrific level of competition across many races and eight records are broken by competitors from Westbourne, St Leonard’s, Loyola and Beaconhills.
The scene is set for an exciting second half and the athletes do not disappoint. By the end of the 50 metre events Westbourne has a narrow lead in the Girls section, St Leonard’s and St Michael’s are tussling for top spot in the Boys section with Beaconhills in the mix. However the best was yet to come; a dead heat for first place between Westbourne and Beaconhills in the Junior Girls 100 m Freestyle was amazing to watch, followed by three more records in the Junior Boys 100 m Free – 1st and 2nd place coming in under the record; Intermediate Girls and Senior Boys 100 m Free.
At the end of the individual events 105; Westbourne was ahead of St Leonard’s in the Girls section, while St Leonard’s was holding St Michael’s, Beaconhills and Westbourne at bay in the Boys. In the Overall Aggregate section St Leonard’s held a tidy lead ahead of Westbourne, St Michael’s and Loyola but anything can happen in the relays where the points are great and striving for the higher places can reap rewards. St Leonard’s and Westbourne displayed the depth of their strength by winning six and five relays respectively and for the closest results.
A special mention and congratulations to the Westbourne Female and Male Swimmers of the Meet as winners of the individual award across multiple years; Female; Paris for 5 years in succession and Male; Marco for 3 years in a row. A fantastic achievement for both athletes.
Overnewton showed a great level of endeavour with outstanding results in Year 8, 10 and 12. Thomas Carr’s Year 10, 11 and 12 Girls and Year 9 Boys had excellent results. Beaconhills won their first pennants for Year 7 Boys, Year 9 Girls and Year 9 Aggregate and Loyola won the Year 11 Girls. St Michael’s won Year 9 Boys with the remaining pennants shared between St Leonard’s and Westbourne.
St Leonard’s were comfortable winners of the Boys Aggregate and Overall Aggregate ahead of St Michael’s and Westbourne but the Girls Aggregate trophy was for the first time in ACS history tied between Westbourne and St Leonard’s.
Congratulations to all teams, swimmers and coaches on the outstanding results where the competition was consistently of a highly competitive standard. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
